The Breitling Top Time was created by the brand to generate interest among young men for the Breitling brand. This meant a couple of things. One, it wasn’t built with a specific tool purpose in mind like the company’s other chronograph offerings, the Navitimer and Chronomat. And two, the watch was priced much lower than those other chronograph offerings. What Breitling knew though was that if they were going to market the watch to a younger generation, they had to nail the design and boy did they. It also didn’t hurt that in 1965, one year after the release of the first top time, Sean Connery wore a modified Top Time as the legendary James Bond in the movie “Thunderball”. This would be only one of two watches that Sean Connery would ever wear as James Bond, the other being a Rolex Submariner.
Breitling made quite a few different Top Time watches. There were 16 distinct references, some with several variations, round and cushion cases made of steel, plated metal, and solid gold, and sizes that ran from 35mm all the way up to 40mm. The Top Time line definitely offers something for everyone. The reference 2002, seen here is one of the more desirable references from the range. Offered with either a panda or reverse panda (seen here) dial and featuring a tried and true Valjoux 7730 movement.
The 35.55 stainless steel case is in good condition with scratches throughout the case and deeper scratches on the top right lug and left side of the bezel that should be noted. As far as components are concerned, the pushers, signed crown, and signed case back look to be correct for the watch and the acrylic crystal is in good condition.
The Dial and Hands
The reverse panda dial is in good condition. It shows no major discoloration or scratches to note although the lume is mostly absent from the hour markers where it should be. The handset is not correct for the reference and rather is from a later top time model.
This watch is powered by a hand wound Valjoux 7730 chronograph movement. The watch is running with all functions of the chronograph working as intended. The service history of the watch is unknown.
