Citizen Bullhead Chronograph With Cal. 8110A

The Reference

Where to start, oh where to start. Should it be the bullhead case and panda dial, the movement, or the fact that it is the watch that Brad Pitt’s character wore in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood? As cool as the design and cinematic connection are, for us it is all about the movement. Launched in 1972, the caliber 8110A chronograph movement is equipped with a set of features that is truly astonishing both for its time period and for today. Even more so when you consider the price point. The 8110A is an automatic, high-beat, column wheel/vertical clutch, fly-back, movement with a quick set day and date. Take a second to take that all in and try to think of another chronograph movement that offers all of that, and then think of another chronograph movement that does all of that at this price point. We’ll wait.

The Case and Bracelet

The 38mm stainless steel case is in great to excellent condition with no major flaws to note. The SSB markings on the case back would indicate that the watch was delivered with a black bezel that has now been polished off but the polish appears to have been done with a delicate hand and the case retains its overall dimensions. The signed crown, as well as the caseback, and pushers all appear to be correct for the watch. Lastly, the correct Citizen signed bracelet is in matching great to excellent condition and will fit up to an 8-inch wrist.

The Dial and Hands

With such a unique case and movement it would be easy to overlook the dial but that would be a mistake. The panda design is classic with a few hidden gems that include a day-date hidden within the lower sub-register, the movement caliber number printed between the 7 and 8 o’clock hour markers, and hands in a vibrant orange. Overall condition is excellent.

The Movement

This watch features a Citizen caliber 8110A, which is an automatic, high-beat, column wheel/vertical clutch, fly-back, movement with a quick set day and date. The watch is running with all chronograph features functioning as expected. The service history is not known.
