The Reference

In 1969 Gianni Cancellieri, Italy’s leading automotive and motorsport journalist of the era, enlisted the help of a relatively unknown artist by the name of Giorgio Piola to produce a series of technical drawings and a report from the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix. That would be an inflection point for Piola that would lead to him becoming the premier technical artist not only for Formula 1 but also for the whole of the automotive and motorsports world. Piola, wanting to expand on his artwork, started a lifestyle brand in recent years and this G5 model of his namesake brand was their first even mechanical watch.

The Case

The 48mm forged carbon case is in great condition. There is a lot going on design wise from the titanium brake disc rotor bezel to the milled steel and rubber crown, to the large chronograph pushers with red lettering but it all seems to fit well together and plays into the busy design language rather than fighting it. The watch features a display caseback and its original rubber strap with a double deployant clasp that will fit a 7-inch wrist.

The Dial and Hands

The dial and hands, much like the case itself, lean maximalist with carbon, white red, and yellow accents. Legibility remains relatively good despite the various functions and colors. Overall condition is great.

DSC2930

The Movement

This watch features a Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement. The watch is running with all chronograph functions operating as expected. The service history is not known.
