The Reference

Helbros watches are a fantastic American story. William Helbein, one of the founders and later long-time company president,  arrived in the US in 1911, coming through Ellis Island and embarked on a career as a diamond importer and later a watch assembler. Helbein used all the mediums available to him to sell watches. He used print, radio, and later TV advertising to great success. He also distributed watches through catalogs, shops, dealers, approval, and any other way he and his company could find. Helbros made watches for any taste, and pretty much any pocket. After Helbein died at the age of 70 the watch company declined and was effectively closed by the early 1970s. Despite some revivals of the name, no one has made it flourish as it did during Helbein’s lifetime. DSC3470

The Case

The 37mm stainless steel case is in good condition. The case design is classic skin diver with a bi-drectional 60 minute bezel, screw down crown, and screw down caseback for added water resistance. It should be noted that the pip on the bezel has lost some of its luminous material. The acrylic crystal is in very good condition. DSC3468

The Dial and Hands

The black dial is in very good condition. Like most skin divers, legibility is key and the large lumed hour markers stick have high contrast against the matte black of the dial. The hands are where this watch really comes to life with an odd yet pleasant mix of syringe, broad arrow and stick styles across the three hands. DSC3478

The Movement

This watch features an automatic, Helbros signed PUW 1461 movement. The watch is running and the service history is not known.
