If you have ever found yourself in the boggy Maine wilderness while Moose hunting only to find that your boots have failed you and left you with wet feet then you and L.L. Bean founder Leon Leonwod Bean have something in common. That exact scenario was what led L.L. Bean, who had zero background in shoes, clothing, or anything of the sort, to create the Main Hunting Shoe, or what is better known as the Bean boot and eventually the company bearing his name. L.L. Bean the company grew quickly as a result of smart catalog marketing and a reputation for quality among outdoorsmen. As the company grew so did the range of products that they offered and that of course meant that an L.L. Bean watch would hit the catalog.
The Hamilton field watch was the perfect watch to bear the L.L. Bean name on its dial. Originally created for the US armed services after the Second World War, the Hamilton field watch is a true American classic and it is that exact rugged Americana that made it a great fit for the L.L. Bean brand in the 1980s. During the 80’s L.L. Bean was having a moment in the sunshine associated with the preppy dressing trend and as a result, was adding items to its growing catalog. The simple time only design, rugged steel case, and 12 and 24 hour numerals fit the L.L. Bean aesthetic perfectly. The original partnership would produce the Men’s field watch seen here, which was listed for $59 as well as a Women’s field watch for $55 and a pocket watch for $75. The collaboration was such a success for Hamilton that they would go on to partner with Orvis and Brookstone as well in the years after.
The 34mm stainless steel case is in great to excellent condition with no major flaws to note. All of the components are correct for the watch and thought to be original. The acrylic crystal is also in very good condition with no major scratches. The crown features the Hamilton signature.
The Dial and Hands
