In 1916 Panerai filed a patent for a radium based luminous material that they dubbed Radiomir for use in the dials of sighting instruments and other devices. 20 years later Panerai would use the same name for a prototype watch that they produced at the request of The Royal Italian Navy for use by the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command just before the start of World War II. The prototype and later production models would feature a cushion-shaped steel case, large luminescent Arabic numerals and indices, wire lugs welded to the case, a hand-wound mechanical movement, and a water-resistant strap long enough to be worn over a diving suit of the coveted frogmen. A later addition of a patented crown lock would bring water-proof protection up to 200 meters. In 1993 Panerai would step out from behind their veil of military secrecy and produce their first line of watches for the public. The watches were true to the roots of Panerai and quickly garnered success the world over.
The Panerai PAM 510 Luminor Marina 8 Days With in house Caliber P.5000 was introduced in 2013 and features nearly all of the hallmark design and functionality that Panerai is known for. The 44mm cushion case is classic Panerai and as a Luminor included the integrated crown lock. The sandwich dial is immensely legible and features a small seconds hand at the 9 o’clock position and plenty of luminous material. And lastly, the movement is an in-house hand wound model with an 8 day power reserve (192 hours) that harkens back to the Angelus-made 8-day movements that could be found in early military Panerai watches. All pure Panerai goodness through and through.
This watch is being sold by its original owner who purchased it from an authorized retailer. It comes with its original box and papers dated July 11, 2014, its original strap, strap changing screw driver, and an additional Panerai black rubber strap.
The 44mm stainless steel case is in good condition. The watch shows signs of normal wear that include scratches and some dings. As mentioned above the watch features the signature crown lock of all Luminor models. Additionally, the watch features a sapphire crystal and display caseback that puts the Caliber P.5000 movement on display. The watch comes with its original brown leather strap as well as an additional black strap purchased from Panerai.
The Dial and Hands
The dial and hands are in excellent condition with no faults to note. The dial is what is often referred to as a sandwich dial which means that the dial consists of two components, a bottom layer that contains the luminous material, and a top layer with cutouts for the lume to shine through.
This watch features a hand wound Panerai Caliber P.5000 movement with 8 day power reserve. The watch is running and the service history is unknown.
