Often wrongly dismissed as simply an American subsidiary of Longines, the Wittnauer brand traces back to around 1866 and a family of Swiss immigrants in New York City. Jacques Eugéne Robert partnered with his new brother in law Albert Wittnauer to develop a line of imported Swiss watches under the brand name Wittnauer. Following the passing of Jacques Eugéne and Albert, Martha Wittnauer took over the reins in 1916 becoming one of the only women at the top of the watch world and earning the nickname “Miss Time of America.” She sold the brand in 1936 to Hella Deltah Company. The brand went on to change hands a few more times over its history but, contrary to popular belief, Longines has never owned and does not own Wittnauer.
This particular watch, a model 3525, well represents the chronographs that collectors and enthusiasts love about Wittnauer. Its large 40mm case with lovely burgundy bezel insert, reliable Valjoux movement, and beautifully aged lume makes this a great watch for both lovers over new and vintage pieces.
The 40mm stainless steel case is in very good condition with well defined lugs. The watch comes with a red rotative bezel graduated up to 11 and 55. The Bezel has faded to a lovely hue and does have some nicks. The watch comes on a Prospect period bracelet that will fit up to a 7.25 inch wrist.
The Dial and Hands
The black dial is in great condition and features two grey sub-dials for the minutes at 3 o’clock and seconds at 6 o’clock. Hours are marked with batons, dots, and arrows. The hands are in steel with baton shape. The tritium lume, denoted by “T Swiss T” on the dial, has aged to a lovely custard color and is very complete. On the outer side of the dial, you have a chronometer graduated up to 1000.
This watch features the venerable Valjoux 7733 manually wound chronograph movement. The watch is running and all chronograph operations are functioning as expected. The service history is not known.
