The History
Ariste Calame, the founder of Zodiac watches, comes from a long line of master watchmakers in Le Locle, Switzerland. In 1908, wanting to carry on the legacy of the family, he established the Zodiac brand with his son, Louis Ariste Calame, and started producing pocket watches. Since its inception, the brand has focused on all areas of watch production and took great pride in overseeing the quality control of each watch and managing all designs through to production and even choosing the tools by which the watch would be crafted. Innovation has also played a large role in the history of the Zodiac brand. In 1930 they launched their first automatic sports watch, which was quickly followed up by the popular Autographic line that featured an automatic movement, a power reserve gauge, an unbreakable crystal, a radium dial, and was also water and shock resistant. The Autographic laid the foundation for what still remains Zodiac’s most notable models, the Sea Wolf, and the Super Sea Wolf. In 1953 Zodiac introduced the Sea Wolf as the world’s first purpose-built “dive watch” manufactured and marketed to the masses. To date, the original Sea Wolf, and its successor, the early-1970s Super Sea Wolf, are widely considered two of the most iconic commercial dive watches in history. In 2001, the brand was purchased by the Fossil Group, which has poured significant resources into the brand with a focus on producing updated versions of the brand’s most iconic models.
The Reference
The Zodiac x Worn & Wound Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition represents the first collaboration between the two brands and boy did they shoot for the moon. The inspiration behind the design of the limited run of watches comes from outdoors/hiking sneakers and gear, the design brings together bold colors and unexpected textures to create an energetic, high contrast package, with a touch of 90s style. From the Worn & Wound team themselves, the dial features a charcoal gray surface with a “subtle grid texture as a nod to tech fabrics. It is adorned with orange-anodized markers for a metallic glint, and a bright sunflower yellow chapter ring for an explosion of color. The hands are rendered in coral, blue and mustard, always standing out against the gray below, while the date wheel is printed in bright teal, adding another point of contrast. The bezel features a 12-hr index, an uncommon detail on a Super Sea Wolf but one that fits the outdoors concept as it lends itself to travel. The insert is charcoal gray, but features a flecked-pattern inspired by sneaker midsoles, and numerals in teal and mustard, tying in with the dial.”
This watch was produced in a limited run of just 182 pieces and sold out almost immediately. This is your chance to get one if you missed out earlier this year. This example is number 95 and comes as a complete set with box and papers.
The Case
The case is in excellent condition as should be expected from a new watch. The watch was worn sparingly and signs of wear are difficult to find. The case measures 40mm across with a thickness of 13.6mm. The caseback features the Worn & Wound W&M logo as well as the edition number which as mentioned above is 95 out of 182.
The Dial and Hands
Like the case the dial is in excellent condition and shows no flaws. As described above the dial features a charcoal gray surface with a “subtle grid texture as a nod to tech fabrics. It is adorned with orange-anodized markers for a metallic glint, and a bright sunflower yellow chapter ring for an explosion of color. The hands are rendered in coral, blue and mustard, always standing out against the gray below, while the date wheel is printed in bright teal, adding another point of contrast.”
The Movement
This watch is powered by a STP 3-13, Swiss-made automatic movement. Featuring 26-jewels, a customized date, swan-neck regulator, hand-winding, hacking seconds, a power reserve of 44hr and a frequency of 28,800 bph. The watch is running at delivery specifications and has not been serviced. The original warranty is still in place as well.
